In Nichomachean Ethics Aristotle says “Hence the young man is not a fit student of Moral Philosophy, for he has no experience in the actions of life, …”. I must disagree. Proverbs 22:6 says “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. ” The young man and the young lady are more than fit students of Moral Philosophy.
Many of us, myself included, have tried to train our children by focusing on what they should NOT do. “Don’t hit your brother”, “stop complaining”, and on and on. You know how it goes. Certainly, resolute correction is needed. Yet, Proverbs 22:6 is needed more, much more.
Take any moral quality you want: kindness, courage, cheerfulness, friendliness, helpfulness, etc. — the list is long. Find ways to teach and demonstrate these qualities and you will be abundantly rewarded.
