Firat, science is the process of explaining observations about the world around us. Call them “facts”. It proceeds by stating hypotheses, which can be confirmed or negated at some level of probability. Many of the facts are inferred from indirect observation. The fact of the existence of the Higgs boson is a fairly recent example. To produce Higgs bosons, two beams of particles are accelerated to very high energies and allowed to collide within a particle detector. Occasionally, although rarely, a Higgs boson will be created fleetingly as part of the collision byproducts. Because the Higgs boson decays very quickly, particle detectors cannot detect it directly. Instead the detectors register all the decay products (the decay signature) and from the data the decay process is reconstructed.
The Bible makes statements as matters of truth. It does not give explanations that would stand as fact from the scientific method. The Genesis story states that God made the heavens and the earth in six Night-Day periods. Were these six 24-hour periods? That would be hard to reconcile with science. It’s curious, though, that the sun and moon don’t appear until the fourth day.
There is much more to say on the history of dealing with this question. If the Bible is the result of revelations given to some 40+ authors, it’s hard to believe that any of its truths are wrong. Any apparent contradiction may just be the distance that remains between Fact and Truth.
